Zara Phillips Launches Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship At The Royal Windsor Horse Show

10/05/2013

LandRover_RHWS_ZaraPhillips_001_LowRes

Zara Phillips visited the Royal Windsor Horse Show this month to announce a new engineering scholarship programme. The Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship will provide a £9,000 bursary to three female students or apprentices who would like to explore a career or further studies in engineering.  In addition the winners will be provided with mentoring support from both Land Rover senior engineers and WISE representatives.

In launching the campaign Zara spoke about how inspiring both her Grandmother and her mother were in encouraging young women to consider a career in engineering. The Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, joined the ATS at her own insistence in 1945, aged 18. Having enlisted as a Subaltern, the Queen progressed by the end of the war to the rank of Junior Commander after completing course No. 1 at the Mechanical Training Centre of the ATS. As part of her training to become a fully qualified driver, the then Princess had to learn how to fix a car, including changing the wheel and basic engine maintenance.

Princess Anne is the patron of WISE which helps organisations to inspire women and girls to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) as pathways to exciting and fulfilling careers.

Talking about the campaign, Zara said: “The UK has a rich heritage of women in engineering, encouraged by the success of the ATS. I’m delighted to be supporting the Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship which provides young women with the opportunity to progress their career. In the Three Day Eventing world, I compete equally with men and enjoy the challenge. In fact, on the Olympic team there was actually only one man and we all made a great team.  There are equal opportunities for both men and women to succeed in engineering and now is an exciting time to get involved.”

Nicci Cook, Senior HR Manager, from Land Rover said: “Land Rover has a proud tradition of encouraging diversity in the workplace. Engineering is at the very heart of our business and we rely on a broad range of talents to give us a competitive edge and help us move forwards. We hope that the Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship will inspire a new generation of women in engineering.”

According to a report published by EngineeringUK, Britain needs to double the number of engineering graduates and triple the number of engineering apprentices by 2020 to meet industry needs. At present, just thirteen per cent of engineering undergraduates are female, a problem Land Rover is determined to address. In addition to the Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship, Land Rover already runs specific training schemes to support ambitious female engineers.

The funding for the Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship has come from the 2012 MacRobert Award, which was presented to Land Rover for the Range Rover Evoque.  The MacRobert Award is the premier UK award for engineering.  The judges credited the ingenuity of the Land Rover engineers who succeeded in packaging key components under the vehicle floor, “with millimetre accuracy.”

The scholarship is the first key activity to be announced using the funding from the award.  The remainder of the fund will be used to expand Land Rover’s Inspiring Tomorrow’s Engineers 4×4 schools challenge into a global initiative – allowing schools around the world the opportunity to explore engineering as a career option.

Speaking about the Scholarship, WISE Director Helen Wollaston said: “The greatest British brands emerged through creativity, innovation and passion – all qualities which shine through all the female engineers I have met, but at the moment, there are far too few of them. This new scholarship offers a really good start for a young woman entering the engineering profession. The industry needs to attract more female talent; this is a wonderful opportunity to do just that.”

The scholarship has also been welcomed by government.  Minister for Skills, Matthew Hancock MP, said: “Britain needs more engineers from a diverse range of backgrounds to compete effectively in today’s world. The government is delighted that the Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship recognises the key role played by female engineers and hopes that it will encourage more women to pursue a career in this exciting, dynamic industry.”

The Range Rover Evoque WISE Scholarship is open to any woman who has arranged an engineering based apprenticeship or has a confirmed place on a higher education engineering course. For more information and to apply visit http://www.inspiringtomorrowsengineers.com

Meet the Customer – Mr David Fishwick

07/05/2013

DSC_0398

Meet David Fishwick. Local Entrepreneur, businessman and the man behind the CH4 series ‘Bank of Dave’. Having recently purchased a vehicle at Hillendale, we thought who better to feature as our ‘Meet the Customer’ then our very own local celebrity.

Arriving in his new Range Rover Sport on route to a filming location; Dave is already clocking up the miles with the Range Rover lending itself brilliantly to both work and play, as he travels across the country filming a new mini series on pay day loans. Having also appeared in ‘Secret Millions’ tackling youth employment; he also mentioned a new 6 part series being kept firmly under wraps to be revealed later this year.

Now a familiar face at Hillendale, David is instantly recognisable appearing across our TV screens; he is however a true Lancastrian at heart. Born in Nelson, David has lived in Burnley most of his life and has made his name as the largest supplier of minibuses in the country with its head office based in Colne. With a deep connection with the area has never forgotten his humble beginnings despite his obvious fame and success – something he has highlighted time and again in his ventures away from his day job.

Dave rose to fame after what has become known as a real life ‘David & Goliath’ battle against the high street banks in the UK. With the notoriety of the recent banking crisis and the effects that it was having on loyal customers, David decided to take matters into his own hands tearing up the rule book on retail banking. It was this that generated a huge amount of media interest leading to the Channel 4 series and when talking to us it was obvious he was extremely passionate about tackling the odds and providing opportunities for real change; something he spoke of directly in relation to Burnley and the local area.

A real car enthusiast and a pilot in his own right, Dave loves nothing more than regular flights in his helicopter and with his rising profile he is still very much in touch with the local area in support of local businesses.

We look forward to welcoming him back to the dealership in the near future and are in anticipation of his next venture. We wish him all the best with his news Channel four series and look forward to spotting our Range Rover Sport being used widely in the filming.

Land Rover Celebrates 65 Years Of Technology And Innovation With Defender LXV Special Edition

30/04/2013

all-new_rrs_lr_series_i_all-new_rr_LowRes

Land Rover marks 65years of technology and innovation with a celebratory event at Packington Estate near its Solihull homeland. A ‘HUE’ birthday cake was flown in by special delivery in a Lynx helicopter by a member of the ‘Black Cats’ Royal Navy display team,  renowned for thrilling audiences with their dynamic air displays.

The desire to create a vehicle that will tackle any terrain has been at the forefront of the Land Rover brand since the foundations were first sketched in the sand by Maurice Wilks. This principle has subsequently made Land Rover famous around the world since production began in 1948. ‘HUE 166′ was the very first Series I Land Rover, affectionately known by many as ‘Huey’, and will be on prominent display at the event.

The occasion also set the scene for the debut of a Special Edition Defender – the LXV (65 in roman numerals). Defender evolved from the original Land Rover in 1990 and this iconic family of utility vehicles – Land Rover Series I, II, III and Defender – has now sold in excess of two million units. Available in five different body styles, the LXV is based on the standard Land Rover Defender which is equipped with the 2.2-litre diesel engine and 6-speed manual transmission, producing 122PS@3,500rpm of power and 360Nm@2,000rpm of torque.

This striking Special Edition sports 16-inch Sawtooth alloy wheels and comes in Santorini Black or Fuji White with contrast Corris Grey roof, grille and headlight surrounds and facia. The interior boasts exclusive full leather seats with LXV embossed front headrests and unique orange contrast stitching on the seats, steering wheel and centre cubby compartment to complement exterior LXV decals. An optional union flag decal can be located on the rear of the vehicle. Prices will be available in August.

Around 150 heritage Land Rovers are attending the celebratory event at Packington Estate which was the testing ground for the original 1947-48 Land Rover prototypes through to the Range Rover development vehicles of the late 1960′s and early 70′s. These vehicles showcase key milestones in Land Rover’s 65-year history and also some 4×4 world firsts such as anti-lock brakes, adjustable air suspension, Electronic Traction Control, Hill Descent Control, Terrain Response® and Stop/Start technologies.

The vehicles on display demonstrate Land Rover’s legendary breadth of capability, with ploughing, emergency service, military, expedition, royal and concept vehicles all firmly positioning Land Rover as the world’s most versatile vehicle. They sit alongside Land Rover’s current model line-up – the Defender, Discovery, Freelander, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Evoque – and include the brand’s latest technological innovations in the form of the new Electric Defender research vehicle and the world’s first 9-speed transmission for a passenger car.

John Edwards, Land Rover’s Global Brand Director says: “Land Rover is celebrating 65 years of proud heritage. It is in fact a dual celebration, as March saw Land Rover deliver the strongest ever monthly and quarterly sales performance in its history.

“Since 1948, every component in our vehicles has been designed and engineered with intent and Land Rover continues to this day, to build the world’s most capable all-purpose vehicles. A blend of refinement, performance and unmatched all-terrain capability make Land Rover vehicles distinctive and unique, ready to tackle the world’s most challenging and inhospitable terrain.”

John Edwards continues: “The all-new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are the result of unprecedented investment in technology, in engineering and in our manufacturing facilities to produce the world’s first SUVs with a lightweight aluminium body structure. Investing in innovation has always been the lifeblood of Land Rover and we will continue to develop innovative new technology and sustainable motoring solutions for the future, whilst retaining the class-leading and legendary breadth of capability that Land Rover’s heritage is built upon.”

It’s here; The All New Range Rover Sport

30/03/2013

lr_range_rover_sport_dynamic_18new_LowRes

With the spectacular global reveal of the All-New Range Rover Sport in NYC – Here’s a bit more information on this dynamic new vehicle from Land Rover.

Design: assertive, powerful and muscular

The dynamic new Range Rover Sport has a bold and progressive exterior design that is assertive, powerful and muscular, hinting at the improved driving performance, and positioning the vehicle clearly between the Range Rover and the Evoque through a clear, shared design DNA.

Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern, said: “The new Range Rover Sport is the ultimate luxury SUV.  A new Range Rover Sport for a new era.  Relevant, sustainable and utterly desirable.  Alongside the all-new Range Rover, and the Range Rover Evoque, the new Range Rover Sport represents the third distinct product in Land Rover’s product revolution.  Firmly establishing it as a powerhouse British brand, with exceptional Design at its core.”

With a fresh interpretation of the previous model’s distinctive design, the new vehicle has a sleek and contemporary appearance combined with enhanced use of space.  The new Sport is just 62mm longer than its predecessor, yet at 4850mm, it is shorter than other 7-seater SUVs and most E segment sedans, bringing greater manoeuvrability and ease of parking. However, a significantly longer wheelbase (increased by 178mm) provides greater room and improved access for rear passengers.

Shorter overhangs at the front and rear, plus additional width (+55mm) give the new vehicle a more modern stance.

With its ‘faster’ windscreen angle, streamlined and rounded profile and lower, dynamic sloping roofline, the new Range Rover Sport is 8 percent more aerodynamic than the outgoing vehicle (Cd 0.34).  The new Sport is 149mm shorter and 55mm lower than the all-new Range Rover on which it is based and model-for-model weighs 45kg less.

While it was developed alongside the Range Rover and shares some commonality with its sister vehicle, the all-new Range Rover Sport benefits from 75 percent unique parts, a significant number of which directly influence the way the new Sport looks and feels.

To maximise personalisation, customers will be offered a choice of wheel designs ranging through 19-, 20-, 21- and 22-inches in diameter including the iconic “Viper’s Nest” wheel design, now available for the first time across all Range Rover models.

Capability: the broadest range of abilities in an SUV

The new Range Rover Sport has been engineered to deliver dramatically improved on-road driving dynamics, with more connected and agile handling complemented by enhanced ride and refinement.  The lightweight aluminium suspension is fully-independent, with wide-spaced double-wishbones at the front and an advanced multi-link layout at the rear.

Wheel-travel is class-leading (260mm front and 272mm rear) and provides exceptional wheel articulation of 546mm to deal with the toughest conditions.  Maximum ground clearance is increased to 278mm (+51mm) and the upgraded air suspension system automatically varies between two ride heights, while the next generation ground-breaking Terrain Response® 2 system automatically selects the most suitable terrain programme.

Fifth generation air suspension provides up to 115mm of regular movement, from the lowest setting ‘access height’ (now 10mm lower at 50mm for easier entry and exit) to the standard off-road height.  An automatic extension, triggered by sensors, and a manually-selected extension, both raise the Sport by 35mm, giving a total movement range of 185mm.

The re-engineered air suspension system with its new +35mm intermediate setting means that the off-road mode can remain available at much higher speeds (80km/h up from 50km/h) than was possible before, which is valuable in terrain with long, rutted dirt roads.

All-new, the electric power steering is characterised by a lighter, more direct steering feel.  A choice of two full-time 4WD systems will be offered.  One system provides a two-speed transfer case with low-range option, for the most demanding off-road conditions with a front-rear 50/50 percent default torque split, and 100 percent locking capability.

The alternative system is 18kg lighter and features a single-speed transfer case with a Torsen differential, which automatically distributes torque to the axle with most grip, working together with the traction control systems to deliver excellent traction in all conditions. The default front-rear torque split of 42/58 percent is designed to provide a rear-wheel drive bias for optimum driving dynamics.

Powertrains: four engine choices from launch, with new Hybrid to follow

At launch, all-new Range Rover Sport customers will have a choice of four engines – two supercharged petrol engines (5.0-litre 510PS V8 and the new 3.0-litre 340PS V6) and two diesel engines (3.0-litre 258PS TDV6 and 292PS SDV6).  The powertrain line-up will be expanded later in this year by the addition of a high performance 4.4-litre 339PS SDV8 diesel version.  In addition, an innovative, high-efficiency diesel Hybrid model will be available to order later this year for delivery in 2014.

Across the range, acceleration times for the 0-60mph dash start from sub-5.0 seconds, while fuel consumption is cut by up to 24 percent – depending on model – and CO2 emissions start as low as 194g/km.  All petrol and diesel engines in the new Range Rover Sport are paired with the advanced electronically controlled ZF 8HP70 8-speed automatic gearbox.

The weight reduction measures on the new Range Rover Sport open up the future possibility for the fitment of a smaller, lighter power plant, such as a four cylinder engine. A model which could have an overall weight of less than 2000kg, a reduction of over 500kg* from the previous lightest model.

Sustainability: first in class withlightweight aluminium construction

The all-new Range Rover Sport is the first vehicle in its segment to feature an advanced all-aluminium body structure, which not only contributes to outstanding agility and driving dynamics, but also delivers significantly reduced weight and enhanced sustainability.

Engineered in parallel with the highly-acclaimed new Range Rover, the new model’s lightweight aluminium body structure employs a combination of pressed panels, plus cast, extruded and rolled aluminium alloy parts, so the strength is concentrated precisely where the loads are greatest.  The vehicle’s platform is 39 percent lighter than the previous model’s.

In 2014, the new Sport’s improvement in efficiency will be raised to a new level with the introduction of an ultra-efficient diesel Hybrid achieving CO2 emissions of 169g/km.

All models across the range are fitted with an advanced intelligent Stop/Start system which improves fuel consumption by up to 7 percent.

Interior: modern and luxurious with a strong sporting character

The new Sport provides an interior with distinctive Range Rover Sport design cues, superior detailing and craftsmanship.

A design benchmark in its segment, the Sport interior offers a unique blend of style and understated luxury with strong, elegant lines, top quality materials and an extra dash of sporting character.  Strong, architectural forms within the interior have been enhanced by a cleaner, purer surface treatment, beautifully executed with more luxurious soft-touch surfaces in key touch points around the cabin.

The sporting ambience of the interior is also reflected in the smaller diameter, thicker steering wheel, vertical gear shifter, higher centre console, configurable mood lighting and more generous seat bolsters.  The Sports Command Driving Position (CDP) combines the supreme sense of confidence and control offered by the Range Rover, with a more sporting seating position similar to the Evoque.

Interior packaging is optimised to create a more spacious rear cabin with 24mm more knee room, while occupants also benefit from the wider cabin.  New, neatly integrated third row, occasional 5+2 seating can be specified.  These powered seats leave a flat floor with no loss of boot space and are split 50/50.

Technology: customer-focused vehicle and safety features

The new Range Rover Sport has been developed as the ultimate ‘no compromise’ vehicle that will fit perfectly into its customers’ lifestyles.  It has been engineered to incorporate the latest developments in customer-focused vehicle and safety technologies to enhance comfort, confidence and safety behind the wheel.

New or enhanced chassis technologies for the new Sport include Adaptive Dynamics featuring continuously variable dampers (CVD), and on more powerful models, a dedicated Dynamic mode in the Terrain Response® 2 system for enthusiastic on-road driving.  This system is combined with twin-channel Dynamic Response active lean control, a Dynamic Active Rear Locking Differential, and Torque Vectoring by Braking, which transfers torque to the outside wheels during cornering, reducing understeer.

The new Range Rover Sport offers a comprehensive connectivity package enabling customers to stay seamlessly connected to their vehicle, business and family lives.’Connected car’ technology allows the driver to check the status of the vehicle via an App installed on their smartphone and also provides support features such as Stolen Vehicle Tracking, Emergency Call and Land Rover Assist Call. Finally, a high bandwidth Wi-Fi Hotspot can be installed in the vehicle so that passengers can use the internet and get the best data connection for their smartphones or tablets.

A new, optional colour Head-Up Display presents key vehicle and navigation data without the driver needing to look away from the road, using laser technology for superior clarity and contrast.

The new model introduces a digital camera system which supports three driver assistance features that help deliver improved driver awareness: Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition and Automatic High Beam Assist.  Another unique innovation on the Sport is the new Wade Sensing™ feature that provides ‘depth’ information when driving through water, made even more beneficial to the driver now that the Sport’s maximum wading depth has increased by 150mm over the previous model to 850mm.

Conclusion

The all-new Range Rover Sport, with its greatly enhanced versatility, is destined to continue the outstanding success of its predecessor, which quickly became one of Land Rover’s most popular models following its introduction in 2005, with sales exceeding 380,000 units to date.

Designed and engineered at Land Rover’s development centres in the UK, the new model will be produced in a state-of-the-art low-energy manufacturing facility at Solihull, UK.

On sale during the third quarter of 2013, the new Range Rover Sport will ultimately be introduced in 169 markets worldwide.  Most markets will offer customers a choice of four equipment levels (S, SE, HSE and Autobiography), plus new ‘Dynamic’ versions of the HSE and Autobiography.  An extensive choice of colours, finishes and details will enable customers to create the ultimate bespoke SUV.

Daniel Craig Closes Down NYC For Live Drive

26/03/2013

rr_rrs_14my_daniel_craig_reveal_260313_01_LowRes

In a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood movie, actor Daniel Craig revealed the all-new Range Rover Sport as part of a dramatic drive through one of the world’s most dynamic cities.

The fastest, most agile and responsive Land Rover to date was put to the test by the British actor, who was entrusted to deliver the vehicle for its first unveiling to the world.

After skilfully handling the car and driving it through closed off streets, Craig delivered the all-new Range Rover Sport to a packed crowd of guests including Michael Strahan (former American football player and TV Presenter), Yasmin Le Bon (Model), Zara Phillips MBE and Jade Jagger (Designer) at Skylight at Moynihan Stationon 8thAvenue where the vehicle was officially revealed for the first time.

The dynamic and thrilling drive was filmed as part of a short film titled ‘The Delivery’.  It was broadcast live by Land Rover at http://www.newrangeroversport.com and saw the British brand stage a global reveal live on the streets of its biggest market.

Directed by action film 2ndunit director Jonathan P B Taylor, lauded for his work on Fast & Furious, Spiderman, Captain America and more recently Die Hard, the film tells the story of a driver tasked with delivering a top secret package.  Starting at the Land Rover manufacturing plant in Solihull, UK, the car is shipped under the cover of darkness in a large container over to Manhattan.  It is then unveiled and driven expertly through the streets of the city, over Manhattan Bridge and through a closed off tunnel, in a bid by its driver, Daniel Craig, to get it to the launch venue on time.

Craig was attracted to working with Land Rover not only because of his love for the British brand and its vehicles – but also because both he and the brand share a link with the charity S.A.F.E., of which he is a patron.  Land Rover, having previously donated a Land Rover Defender to the Kenyan NGO and UK Charity 4 years ago, is delighted to continue its support and is donating an additional vehicle to the charity later this year.

The donated Land Rover will be used by the S.A.F.E. team to assist in accessing hard-to-reach areas to educate, inspire and deliver social change.  Using accessible, mobile street theatre and community programmes, S.A.F.E.’s team of local professional performers educate their communities on an array of issues, from HIV to female circumcision to safe drinking water.  S.A.F.E. Founder Nick Reding attended the event in New York with Craig to talk about the charity and said: “Land Rover has generously given us a vehicle in the past, and this event is a great global platform for us to reach out and talk about our work. Land Rover are helping us get the message about what we do and why it works out to so many more people around the world than we could usually hope for.”

Speaking ahead of the official world premiere at the New York International Auto Show, Land Rover Global Brand Director John Edwards said: “The all-new Range Rover Sport is an extraordinary car and we have revealed it in an extraordinary way – live on the streets of its biggest selling market.  It turned heads and it stopped traffic in one of the most dynamic cities in the world.

“The new Range Rover Sport represents a step change in engineering and technology; it is almost half a tonne lighter resulting in significant CO2 savings and it’s faster, more agile and more dynamic than ever.”

The all-new Range Rover Sport, revealed to the world today on the streets of New York, is the ultimate premium sports SUV – the fastest, most agile and responsive Land Rover ever.  The Manhattan skyline was the perfect backdrop for this world premiere with more units of Range Rover Sport sold in the United States than any other global market and New York being the model’s best-selling city.

Developed alongside the highly-acclaimed all-new Range Rover, the new Range Rover Sport now delivers the brand’s best-ever on-road dynamics together with class-leading, genuine Land Rover all-terrain capability. The new, technology-packed, Range Rover Sport, presents customers with a more assertive and muscular exterior, more luxurious interior and the flexibility provided by the option of occasional 5+2 seating.

Exploiting Land Rover’s breakthrough lightweight suspension design and innovative dynamic chassis technologies, the Sport’s all-new, first-in-class aluminium architecture achieves a weight saving of up to 420kg*.  This transforms the vehicle’s dynamic performance, enabling it to blend agile handling with exceptional comfort, offering a unique mix of sporting luxury and a dynamic, connected driving experience, along with CO2 emissions reduced to 194g/km.

Speaking ahead of the official world premiere at the New York International Auto Show, Land Rover Global Brand Director John Edwards said: “The all-new Range Rover Sport is a vehicle that has been designed and engineered without compromise.  With Land Rover capability at its heart, it is one of the most road focussed vehicles we’ve ever produced, but of course still offers unsurpassed all-terrain capability. It is a vehicle which is designed to be driven. We’ve taken ride, handling and agility to another level for Land Rover to deliver a truly rewarding, sporting, drive together with unmatched luxury, capability and versatility.

“Building on the success of the recently launched flagship Range Rover, the new Range Rover Sport also employs a vast array of new technologies which help to transform its performance, refinement and all round capabilities,” adds Edwards.
